History of interchange between KGU and Canada
Dr. C.J.L. Bates, the 4th Chancellor of KG
Ties between KGU, a hub of Canadian studies in western Japan, and Canada began in 1910, when the Canadian Methodist Church joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South of the U.S. to assist Kwansei Gakuin(KG), then a mission school for boys, both financially, and by sending missionaries. One of these, Dr. C.J.L. Bates, the 4th Chancellor of KG, is remembered as the originator of the school motto "Mastery for Service", which embodies the principles underlying KGU's educational mission. KGU has launched the New Strategic Plan for 1o years hence (2009-2018), and one of its visions is 'Creating an international multicultural campus.' To realize the vision, KGU has reinforced the relationship with Canada through its Toronto Liaison Office which was established in 2009. In 2011, approximately 400 KGU students studied in Canadian partner universities.
